Class Requirements:
- Proof of veterinary exam, current Rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination (or similar vaccine protecting against distemper and canine parvovirus)
- Dogs will not be permitted to attend if they are coughing, sneezing, or if there is vomiting or diarrhea
- Your dog must be older than 6 months in order to start class
- Your dog should already respond without a food lure to certain basic commands: Sit, Come, Down, Leave It, Watch Me. These are the skills taught in our Level I and II courses. If your dog is not ready for Level III, consider signing up for Level I or II first or doing some private training.
- Your dog should already be able to play nicely with other dogs and tolerate handling by a variety of people
- Level III classes are held entirely outdoors, off-leash except in certain areas where leashes are required. Aggressive, fearful, noisy, rough-playing or reactive dogs are not permitted. If your dog is not ready for Level III don't worry! Contact Dan and together you can come up with a tailored training plan that meets your needs.
Level III Schedule:
Dan is currently considering options for a Level III class to start in October (date not yet determined) on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Class would meet at the Jamesville Beach off leash dog area. Contact Dan to let him know you're interested and to put in your two cents on which day and time would be best.
Q. Are dogs allowed at the first class?
A. Yes
Q. What if I miss a class?
A. If you know ahead of time that you will likely miss a class session, let Dan know and he will catch you up as best he can over the phone or by email.
Q. Will the dogs be allowed to interact with other dogs and people?
A. Interaction with other dogs off-leash, outdoors, will be the whole point of this course. Play will be incorporated into training.
Q. What will my dog learn in this course?
A. Your dog will learn off leash manners which includes a reliable recall outdoors with real-world distractions. Your dog will learn to wait reliably before greeting new people and new dogs, to stay until released even with significant distractions, Heel with distractions off leash outdoors, Get in the Car on cue, Come from play, Sit and Stay despite distractions, and a solid Leave It cue.
Q. What will I learn?
A. You will learn how to manage your dog on a hike and around other dogs and people in an area specifically set aside for off leash dog play.
Q. What happens if it rains?
A. We will get wet. Please be prepared to be outdoors during this course. Wear comfortable footwear that would be appropriate for hiking. Bring a small backpack with water and clothing layers appropriate to the season. If it's really raining badly, especially if there is thunder and lightening or high winds, class will be rescheduled and Dan will contact you ahead of time to let you know.
Q. What about ticks?
A. There are ticks outdoors. This is a part of life in our region. Please make sure your dog is protected properly as advised by your veterinarian. For your own protection, I recommend a hat, long sleeves and long pants and the use of 20% DEET repellent, permethrin treatment on clothing, or the use of a product containing Picaridin (like Natrapel).
Q. Will my dog be fully trained at the end of this course?
A. You'll probably feel that he is fully trained, but I hope you enjoy training so much that you'll do other training activities such as agility, rally obedience, flyball, and more!
