Class Requirements:
- Proof of veterinary exam, current Rabies vaccination, DHPP vaccination (or similar vaccine protecting against distemper and canine parvovirus)
- Proof of a negative fecal test or proof that an appropriate dewormer has been given by a veterinarian
- Dogs will not be permitted in class if they are coughing, sneezing, or have had vomiting or diarrhea within the previous 48 hours
- Your dog must be older than 5 months in order to start class
- Your dog should already respond without a food lure to certain basic commands: Sit, Come, Down, Leave It, Watch Me. These are the skills taught in our Level I course. If your dog is not ready for Level II, consider signing up for Level I first or doing some private training.
- Your dog should already be able to play nicely with other dogs and tolerate handling by a variety of people
- Level II classes are held off-leash (indoors) at least part of the time. Aggressive, fearful, rough-playing or reactive dogs are not permitted. If your dog is not ready for Level II don't worry! Contact Dan and together you can come up with a tailored training plan that meets your needs.
Level II Schedule:
New classes are scheduled once enough people are interested. Contact Dan and let him know you'd like to continue your training!
Times currently under consideration for new Level II classes:
Option 1) Tuesday, May 8th at 6pm
Option 2) Wednesday, May 23rd at 7pm
Options 3 and 4) Saturday, June 16th at 11am or 1pm
Please contact Dan and let him know which of these times you would prefer (rank them) and a new schedule will be posted once we have a winner. Remember that classes are 6 weeks in length so plan accordingly.
Q. Are dogs allowed at the first class?
A. Yes
Q. What if I miss a class?
A. If you know ahead of time that you will likely miss a class session, let Dan know and he will help you make it up one-on-one or you may choose to attend the same session with a different group if possible.
Q. Will the dogs be allowed to interact with other dogs and people?
A. Interaction with other dogs off-leash, indoors, will be part of this course. Play will be incorporated into training.
Q. What will my dog learn in this course?
A. Your dog will learn to Wait reliably at a distance and with moderate distractions; perform an emergency Down-Stay until released; Heel with moderate distractions indoors and outdoors; Go To Bed or Crate on cue; Greet people politely; Come when called away from distractions; and focus on you in spite of the presence of moderate distractions. We will also work each week on learning ways to solve common problem behaviors (answering the door without barking and jumping, for instance).
Q. What will I learn?
A. You will learn how "proof" your dog's good behavior. You will learn how to operate at increased distance, for longer duration, and in spite of greater distraction, with less reliance on treats or training equipment. You will learn about further opportunities for training and working with your dog.
Q. Will my dog be fully trained at the end of this course?
A. Possibly, but we hope you enjoy training so much that you'll move on to the next level where all the activities take place outdoors. Heel and Come are best practiced outdoors, and commands like Leave It don't meet their full potential until you take the show on the road!
